The Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer is an annual fundraising endurance walk that takes place on October 5-6, 2019, and takes participants through 30 miles of Atlanta over the course of 2 days. Last year, nearly 1,000 walkers committed to fundraising and training for this event.
The Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer’s founder, Randi Passoff, began the 2-Day Walk in 2002 when the Avon 3-Day Walk faced financial difficulty and pulled out of Atlanta. Randi’s goal was to create a fundraising event where money raised stayed right in the communities of the participants. We call the 2-Day “the kinder and gentler breast cancer walk” because we strive to include passionate individuals at different levels of physical and fundraising ability- walkers can walk all 30 miles, or just choose to walk 10 miles on one day.
In 2018, over $1,070,000 was raised from the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer! With the money from the walk, It’s The Journey, Inc. is able to fund grants that serve over 100 counties in Georgia. These programs provide mammograms, clinical breast exams, genetic counseling and testing, biopsies, support services, education, and much more. Many of our grants have a specific focus on under-served individuals in our community- uninsured and under-insured women for whom these types of breast health measures are often not available.
Since 2002, the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer has funded 338 grants totaling $15 million to support breast health programs throughout Georgia.

This time, we’re enjoying Blackberry Bramble Cocktails! An easy and refreshing beverage that allows for substitutions as needed. Don’t have gin? Bourbon or vodka will taste great too! Don’t want it too sweet? Omit the simple syrup. Ginger beer can be substituted with ginger ale, sprite, or a splash of soda and a little simple syrup- make it your own! I love to throw a little spring of mint in if I have some laying around. This is an easy cocktail to turn into a mocktail- simply exclude the alcohol and enjoy the refreshing blackberry, ginger beer, lemon combination all on its own, or add a splash of lemonade instead of gin!
Ingredients
½ C fresh blackberries
2 Ounces Dry Gin
1 Ounce simple syrup or maple or agave (optional- especially if using ginger soda instead of ginger beer)
1 1/2 Ounce fresh lemon juice
Ginger Brew or Soda
Instructions
In a cocktail shaker, muddle blackberries with gin, lemon juice, simple syrup or agave, until broken up and they release their juice.
Double strain, using a fine mesh strainer, to remove seeds.
Fill 3-4 rocks glasses with ice. Divide blackberry -gin mix among the glasses, and top with soda or ginger brew. Garnish with a blackberry and lemon zest.

Strawberry Mojito Recipe:
½ Cup Strawberries
3-4 mint leaves (or cilantro/basil if you’re into that sort of thing)
Juice from half a lime
2 ounces light rum
Club Soda to fill
Garnish with a lime wedge
1 table spoon of simple syrup
Instructions:
Muddle strawberries in the bottom of the glass with your herbs, mix in your lime juice, simple syrup, and rum, fill glass with ice, and fill with club soda. Give it a quick stir and garnish it with a lime wedge.
To create a mocktail version, you can replace the rum with apple juice, or subtract the rum and club soda and use tonic water instead for the bite.
Our very first Adventure kicks off Friday, June 12, and ends on Thursday, June 25! A huge thank you to Green.Money for helping us make our first Adventure possible!
Our 7-part Adventure series is designed to inspire you- getting you out of the house to explore new paths, to recruit new 2-Day Walkers, and to raise even more money to fight breast cancer in Georgia!
For our first Adventure, we are challenging you to:
– Get back into 2-Day training mode! We want you to walk 20 miles between June 12- June 25! You can log your miles and share training tips, locations, etc. in our ITJ Staff Challenge Community on Fitbit (details on how to join below- you do NOT need a Fitbit to participate)! Take a picture while out training, email it to wjones@2daywalk.org, and you could be featured on our Instagram page!
Here’s how you can join us on the ITJ Staff Challenge Community on the Fitbit App:
– On the Fitbit app, open the “Community” tab
– Hit the “Add Friend” image (a plus sign with person symbol)
– Search username “WhitneyPack” or “JonMcMurdo” and add friend
– We will add you to the challenge!
Even if you don’t have a Fitbit, the app can work with other trackers or with your smartphone! Simply download the Fitbit app to your phone, and authorize the app to read your health statistics (just hit “accept” on everything when they ask for authorization).
– Help us recruit 100 rookies by July 10! This is a big challenge so it will be ongoing through our first 2 Adventures. We have recruited 33 rookies since Kick Off, so we’re a 1/3 of the way to our goal with one month to go!
CONTEST: If you recruit a rookie between now and the end of this first Adventure on June 25th, both you AND your rookie will be entered to win new Fitbits! Your rookie must list you as their reference in the “How did you hear about us” section of their 2-Day registration form. Every rookie you recruit is another entry into the contest! The winners will be announced live at 6:00 pm during our next Pink Drink Social Club on June 25th! Spread the word and get recruiting! Share this link to get your friends to sign up: https://gaabc.org/get-involved/
– Help us catch back up on fundraising. In order to get back on track, we need our 2-Day fundraising thermometer to reach $300,000 by July 10. This is a big task as we are currently at $136,895. But we can do it with your help! If all of our participants aim to raise $50/week for the next four weeks, we will blow our goal out of the water!
– Check out our Inspiration Locations for our Adventures! Our first Inspiration Location is Yellow River Park! Located near Stone Mountain, this forested riverside park is the perfect place to get your steps in! The park features a 1 mile, multi-use paved surface trail, plus a 12 mile soft surface trail that’s great for both mountain biking and hiking. A great feature of this park is that they offer separate bike trails, pedestrian trails, equestrian trails, and mixed use trails. The soft surface trail has an easy 3.2 mile out and back route that is fairly level, and perfect for walkers of all fitness levels. Just hike the riverside trail out and back. See details here. There are restrooms and picnic pavilions on site, so make a day of it!

Our second Adventure kicks off Friday, June 26, and ends on Thursday, July 9! A huge thank you to Datadobi for helping us make this Adventure possible!
Our 7-part Adventure series is designed to inspire you- getting you out of the house to explore new paths, to recruit new 2-Day Walkers, and to raise even more money to fight breast cancer in Georgia!
For our second Adventure, we are challenging you to:
- Walk to Your Favorite Restaurant: If you live close enough to safely walk to a nearby restaurant that you love, turn it into an opportunity to get some steps in! We know that now, more than ever, some of your incredible 2-Day fundraising partners are in need of some extra support! Send us a pic of you out supporting your favorite restaurant, and you could be the next person featured on our Instagram page! Email those pictures to wjones@2daywalk.org.
- Contest: Earn Your Team a Mad Italian Pizza Party! Now is the time to reach out to past 2-Day participants who still need to register, to friends who have always promised you to walk, and to old team members who have moved! This challenge is open to teams of 5 or more. The team with the most new recruits (can be both rookie and returning participants) per team per capita during this time period will receive an old school pizza party at The Mad Italian! Contest runs Friday, June 26- Thursday, July 9. Good luck!!
- “Catch Up” Fundraising Goal: As a reminder, we are trying to get “caught up” on fundraising, and want our 2-Day fundraising thermometer to read $300,000 by July 10th! This is a big goal, but with a little teamwork, we can do it! If each participant raises $50 per week, we will smash our goal. Every dollar helps, so start small today by asking a friend for a $5 donation!
- Check Out an Inspiration Location! We have two great options for your Inspiration Locations this time! If you’re looking for a great place to explore in metro-Atlanta, we suggest heading over to the Noonday Creek Trail! This 8.5 mile, out and back multi-use trail has two disconnected sections, and runs through both Cherokee and Cobb counties. You can access the trail at any one of its end points, and it is good for walkers of all levels of fitness. Access the northern segment of the trail at Market & Elm Streets in Woodstock (parking available at Woofstock Dog Park, 150 Dupree Rd., Woodstock). Access the southern segment of the trail at Kennesaw National Battlefield Park (1201 Old 41 Highway NW, Kennesaw) or at 3001 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta.
Looking to get out of town for a stretch? How about heading to Savannah and checking out McQueen’s Island Trail! The 6 mile trail is built on an old railroad line, and runs parallel to the Savannah River, crossing through beautiful marshland! To reach the eastern trailhead, follow US 80 east toward Tybee Island. The trailhead entrance is about 15 miles east of Savannah; look for the sign for Fort Pulaski National Monument. Parking is available along the road or at the fort.
To reach the western trailhead, follow the directions above, but continue a few miles along US 80 to a small roadside parking area just before the turnoff for Fort Pulaski.
