On Tuesday, October 13, the sun rose high over Indian Hills Country Club’s beautiful green, a perfect day to golf “Fore the Cure.” Kathy Bovey Bartelme and Helen Hvizdak, long-time local residents and IHCC members, organized the golf tournament and partnered with It’s The Journey, a local breast cancer charity that raises over $1 million dollars annually, exclusively for breast health and breast cancer programs in Georgia.

“Traditionally, It’s The Journey’s efforts are spent almost entirely on producing the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, and we simply don’t have the staff to organize other major events throughout the year,” said Executive Director, Kim Goff. “We are incredibly fortunate to be supported by a vast network of dedicated volunteers, and the tremendous volunteer effort by these ladies is entirely what made the Fore the Cure Tournament possible.”

Kathy Bovey Bartelme, a breast cancer survivor, and her fellow organizers recruited 150 golf participants, 20 volunteers, and dozens of local sponsors in order to bring the event to fruition. The tournament and corresponding silent auction were a great success, raising over $33,500.

When asked why they chose to go to such great effort specifically for breast cancer, Kathy recalled the days after her diagnosis and treatment. “It was an incredibly trying time both physically and emotionally, filled with a lot of unknowns. The thing that got me through it was the overwhelming support and love I received from my family, friends, and community. It’s The Journey’s grants only fund programs in Georgia. Therefore, we were assured our efforts were guaranteed to support the people in our own community who are now facing what I went through. It’s The Journey has provided the mechanism by which we can both prevent breast cancer here in Georgia and support those affected by it in a tangible way.”
