When summertime comes around, the place to be is anywhere outdoors, whether at the beach, pool, or backyard. It seems these days that we go to great lengths to protect our body and face from the damaging impact of the sun, but we seem to neglect protecting our feet!
According the American Podiatric Medical Association, there are a few key things you should be doing to protect your feet during the summer months:
- Apply plenty of sunscreen to the tops of your feet and your ankles, and make sure to reapply if your feet get wet.
- When you get out of the water wash and dry your feet, especially between your toes to prevent the growth of fungus. If you have itchy or flakiness apply a topical anti-fungal medication to the area.
- Do not share towels with others to avoid the spread of Athletes Foot and other diseases.
- Take care of your nail bed. If you have any cracked toenails or cuts they can be especially susceptible to disease. Consult a podiatrist if you notice any discoloration of your toenails.
- To avoid injuries to your toes and ankles, make sure that the shoes you are wearing are appropriate for the activity. For example, do not wear flip flops when playing Frisbee.
This summer, put your best foot forward, and let your feet free from those stuffy winter boots!
