Walk Raised Funds for Those Dealing with Breast Cancer in the Atlanta Area
ATLANTA, Ga. (October 5, 2010) – Nearly 800 Atlantans put their walking shoes on and turned out to “Do The 2” at the 8th annual Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, on Oct. 2-3. The 30-mile walk raised money for those currently dealing with breast cancer in Atlanta and the surrounding communities, and honored survivors as well as the memories of those who lost their battle with breast cancer.
“We are extremely thankful to the thousands of Atlantans who supported of The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer this weekend, either by walking, donating, sponsoring or volunteering – their dedication has inspired thousands and gave those fighting breast cancer the courage and resources to win their battle,” said Robin Cohen, executive director of It’s The Journey, Inc., producer of The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. “The money raised will be granted to many local breast cancer organizations to offer support, financial assistance and awareness programs for those dealing with breast cancer in the Atlanta area. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, and neither does The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. Through the continued hard work and support of thousands of Atlantans, we will help ensure that no one in our surrounding communities fights their battle with breast cancer alone.”
The Walk started Saturday at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and was kicked off with a powerful welcome speech by two-time breast cancer survivor and Atlanta OB/GYN Dr. Jacqueline Walters. The Walk then progressed for 20 miles through several historic neighborhoods, including Downtown Decatur and Little Five Points. Walkers enjoyed a lunch break at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center and then continued walking before closing the day at a special Saturday night banquet, which celebrated the walkers and crew who continue to support the fight against breast cancer. CBS Atlanta television anchor and breast cancer survivor JaQuitta Williams shared her story during the banquet, encouraging those dealing with the disease to never give up fighting and hope. The 10-mile Sunday route included a special breakfast honoring survivors at the Marriott Marquis, where 22-year-old Tiffany Avery told her story about her battle against breast cancer that started at the age of 16. Closing ceremonies took place after walkers crossed the finish line at the World of Coca-Cola, which included a speech by radio personality and breast cancer survivor Kaedy Kiely, live entertainment and family-oriented activities.
The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer raises funds for Atlanta-area breast cancer organizations that provide awareness, education, mammograms, genetic testing and research, transportation, translation, patient advocacy, and support services to thousands of women and their families. To date, the 2-Day Walk has granted $6.6 million to Atlanta-area breast cancer organizations. Grants from funds raised at the 2010 2-Day Walk will be awarded in Q1 2011.
